Machabeng College offers a continuous international education pathway from Lower Secondary through IGCSE to the IB Diploma Programme, preparing students for success at top universities worldwide.
Upper School – IB Diploma Programme (Years 12-13)
Machabeng College International School of Lesotho is the only school of its kind in
Lesotho, delivering internationally recognised education and producing globally competitive
students who progress to leading universities worldwide.
The IBDP Philosophy
In partnership with the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), Machabeng College
prepares students to become independent, internationally minded learners. The IB
Diploma Programme develops critical thinking, reflection, responsible risk-taking and
problem-solving skills, while offering strong academic breadth and depth. Through its
rigorous curriculum, including the Theory of Knowledge course, students are challenged
to think deeply, manage demanding workloads and transition confidently into universitylevel
study.
To meet diverse university preparation needs, Machabeng College offers the following
pathways:
- Full IB Diploma Programme (2 years): Leads to the IB Diploma and a Machabeng
College IB Programme Certificate. - IB Courses Programme (2 years): Allows students to study selected IB subjects,
earning IB Course Certificates and a Machabeng College IB Programme Certifcate.
The International Baccalaureate curriculum is globally recognised for its rigour, accountability
and skill development, preparing students for success at leading universities
worldwide.
The IB Diploma Programme includes three core elements that support holistic development:
- Extended Essay (EE): Develops independent research, academic writing and universitylevel
inquiry skills. - Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Encourages students to reflect critically on how knowledge
is constructed and understood. - Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS): Promotes leadership, teamwork and personal
growth through experiential learning, balancing academic demands.
Subject Choices in IBDP
To ensure both breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, students choose courses from the following subject groups:

● Mandarin ab initio
● Mandarin Language B

● Global Politics
● Business Management
● Biology
● Chemistry
● Sports, exercise, and health science
● Applications and Interpretations (AI)
● Visual Arts
● Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
● Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
NOTE: 1; To earn the full diploma, a student must:
1. Complete at least three subjects at HL and three subjects at SL.
2. Complete three Diploma core elements:– are compulsory and central to the philosophy
of the programme.
NOTE 2; Students who opt to complete the IB course take the same IBDP subjects, however,
they can take a minimum of five subjects and are not restricted to the three SL and
three HL requirements.
